Living with diabetes means you need to be extra aware of everything you consume and how it can affect your blood sugar levels.
Sugary beverages, such as fizzy drinks can cause a sharp rise in blood sugar, which is especially dangerous for diabetics, who are unable to metabolise and regulate their blood glucose levels effectively.
A review of several studies by Harvard University found that those who regularly drink sugary drinks (one or more cans a day), have a 26% increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
Prof Christo Muller, Chief Specialist Scientist at the SA Medical Research Council (SAMRC) says diabetics should avoid or limit such beverages as they can easily get more than a meal’s worth of sugar from one drink without even realising it.
“Consuming too many sweetened drinks also results in weight-gain, which in turn, increases the likelihood of diabetes. Zero- or low-calorie drinks are typically recommended for diabetics to keep blood sugar in check. This makes Rooibos tea ideal since it’s calorie-free and its naturally sweet taste, means no sweeteners are necessary. In addition, Rooibos contains active compounds that can help control blood glucose, while lowering inflammation.
“A unique phenolic compound found only in the Rooibos plant species, called aspalathin, may also help to improve blood glucose levels. Green Rooibos, which is more abundant in aspalathin, is also effective at lowering raised blood glucose levels in animal studies. In these studies, aspalathin, improved insulin activity, the hormone that controls blood sugar levels, by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which are both causal factors that underlie the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
“Rooibos also protects the heart by suppressing vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis (plaque build-up inside artery walls) that occurs as a result of high blood sugar levels,” he explains.
In addition to drinking tea, following a diet that keeps blood glucose stable is equally important. Those suffering from type 2 diabetes, which is primarily as a result of poor dietary lifestyle choices, can in addition to medication, benefit greatly from proper diet and exercise.
Heleen Meyer, popular cookbook author and healthy food consultant, says eating a diet rich in polyphenols (most abundant antioxidants found in food) will help the body to metabolise sugar better.
“These include brightly coloured fruit and vegetables, nuts, fish and drinking Rooibos tea, that’s all packed with antioxidants.
“Aside from drinking the tea, there are many ways to incorporate Rooibos into meals. Think of Rooibos as an all-natural flavouring and cooking ingredient. It’s a wonderful cooking liquid as it’s tasty and full of goodness. Rooibos is the perfect substitute for shop-bought stock, which is often very high in salt, artifical flavourings or preservatives and even sugar. The flavour of Rooibos goes well with so many other ingredients, ranging from tomatoes, ginger, chilli, garlic to herbs and spices, and can be used for a wide range of recipes. Add it as a liquid to soups, stews or even when oven-roasting chicken or veggies.
“It’s also a delicious base for a salad dressing, marinade or sauce. Next time you prepare a tomato-based sauce, add Rooibos instead of stock. Balsamic vinegar or lemon juice and a bit of olive oil, whisked into strong, cooled-down Rooibos tea, is a delicious salad dressing and can be seasoned with fresh herbs of your choice.”
Meyer says Rooibos is also great for baking and making desserts. Milk or water in a baking recipe can often be replaced with Rooibos tea, which will add flavour and a beautiful rich colour to whatever you’re making.
Here are two of her favourite diabetic-friendly recipes, which includes Rooibos:

South Africans are facing a great deal of adversity at the moment, not least of all the third wave of Covid-19 infections. Creating new routines when dealing with ongoing stress seems almost impossible, however, adopting healthy habits to keep physically and mentally strong is more important now than ever.
To assist South Africans in transitioning to a healthier lifestyle this Heart Awareness Month, Laager Rooibos, together with partner and respected dietician, Mbali Mapholi, have created an easy-to-follow Laager Rooibos Heart Health Calendar. Through achievable daily goals, this calendar will help South Africans to create heart-healthy habits that will benefit them through the pandemic and beyond.
“They say it takes 21 days to build a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle change, but this can seem quite daunting right now,” noted Candice Sessions, Laager Rooibos Marketing Manager. “We understand the incredible hardships South Africans are already facing, but heart disease and strokes remain some of the biggest threats to our health.”
Against this backdrop, Laager Rooibos and partner dietician Mbali Mapholi, came up with an innovative solution that would make it easy for everyday South Africans to take care of their heart-health while improving their overall wellbeing this Heart Awareness Month.
“Promoting heart health is something that Laager Rooibos is committed to, which is why we’re encouraging as many people as possible to follow the Laager Rooibos Heart Health Calendar,” continued Sessions. “These daily heart-healthy acts will soon become habits. And really, the right time to take heart health seriously is now.”
Mbali Mapholi said, in the fight against heart-related diseases, a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons: “It can seem overwhelming with all these healthy habits you might need to consider, but it’s not as hard as you may think! Start small and start today, and your heart will thank you immensely. This calendar will help you adopt practical day-to-day heart-healthy habits that will hopefully remain long-term.”
In South Africa, heart disease and strokes have the highest mortality rate after tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/Aids. In fact, one in every five deaths in South Africa are caused by cardio-vascular disease (CVD). Laager Rooibos is the only Rooibos brand that carries the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA) Heart Mark, which identifies heart healthy products.
Heart Awareness Month is an initiative created by the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA). Prof Pamela Naidoo, the CEO of HSFSA, explained the urgent need to adopt healthier heart habits: “CVD, including heart disease, remains a public health challenge given that CVD remains the highest burden of all the non-communicable diseases. Covid-19 has also exposed the vulnerability of individuals who test positive and have co-existing hypertension or high body mass index, as they are more likely to suffer from CVD.”

Given the high cost of allergy and asthma medication, local researchers from the University of Cape Town are now examining the extent to which Rooibos tea can provide relief for those plagued by runny, stuffy noses and itchy eyes.
Prof Jonny Peter, head of allergology and immunology at the UCT Lung Institute says allergies are becoming increasingly common worldwide and the prevalence is increasing in low and middle-income countries too – affecting an estimated 30% of South African adults.
“Different types of allergies include life-threatening anaphylaxis, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), asthma, food allergy, conjunctivitis and skin allergies, such as angioedema, urticaria (hives) and eczema. However, the most predominant is allergic rhinitis, which is typically triggered by house dust mite and fine powdery pollen from trees, weeds and grasses that can flower for up to nine months of the year.
“The cost for treating allergic rhinitis has increased substantially in recent years and places a huge financial burden on many patients, which is why there is a renewed interest in herbal and alternative remedies, such as Rooibos, that might be more affordable and accessible,” he remarks.
Previous allergy studies have investigated the effects of Rooibos in a laboratory on different cell types (in vitro – outside a living organism), and these have shown some promise.
Bioflavonoids, such as rutin and quercetin, that are found in Rooibos, could relieve itchy eyes and a runny nose. Quercetin can block the release of histamine from mast cells, and this may be why it could reduce symptoms.
Prof Peter and senior researcher, Dr Sarah Pedretti have also conducted their own cell studies and found Rooibos to suppress basophil activation.
“Basophils are white blood cells involved in many kinds of inflammatory reactions, particularly those that cause allergic symptoms. This means that Rooibos could to a certain degree control or inhibit the allergic response, but for many herbal remedies promising lab data has not translated to a meaningful
clinical effect. The clinical trials we are about to embark on should address this gap and give us a clearer indication of its clinical effectiveness,” says Prof Peter.
The two trials are set to start in the next few months and will build on the preliminary findings. Prof Peter explains:
“The first will be an open-label, randomised active-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of oral fermented and unfermented Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) extracts for the treatment of house dust mite-induced allergic rhinitis. Our study will be able to tell us whether any benefit can be derived from drinkable quantities of a standardised fermented and unfermented Aspalathus linearis extract – sold commercially and readily available as Rooibos tea. The overall objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of oral ingestion of Rooibos tea compared to an active control of decaffeinated black tea and if it can reduce the clinical effects of nasal allergen provocation testing with house dust mite in
sensitised allergic rhinitis patients. We’re aiming for 80 participants.
“The second trial will evaluate the efficacy of nasal irrigation with fermented and unfermented Aspalathus linearis extracts, also for the treatment of house dust mite-induced allergic rhinitis. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of nasal irrigation with Rooibos tea compared to an active control of saline solution, and whether it can reduce the allergic response from house dust mite
in sensitised patients. Here we’re aiming for 130 participants.
“We think that Rooibos may have good allergenic effects. The trials will be able to give us a clearer picture and will provide further indication in terms of specific concentrations needed to provide the desired outcome.”
He advises allergy sufferers to not replace antihistamines with Rooibos just yet, but that in future more natural treatments containing Rooibos could be beneficial.
If you suffer from allergic rhinitis and would like to participate in the trial, please contact Noejfah Jardien on 021 406 6889 or email her at Noejfah.Jardien@uct.ac.za

Notes to editor:
- In vitro translates from Latin as “in glass.” This testing method involves experiments on biological matter (cells or tissues) outside of a living organism.
- ex vivo means “outside of a living body.” In this type of experiment, the living tissues are not created artificially, but directly taken from a living organism. The experiment is then immediately conducted in a laboratory environment, with minimal alteration of the organism’s natural conditions.
- An open-label trial is a type of clinical trial in which information is not withheld from trial participants, therefore, the researchers and participants know which treatment is being administered.
According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), an estimated 4.5 million South African adults are likely to have diabetes. What’s even more frightening is that diabetes rates in the country have increased by an alarming 155% in the last decade alone – making it the second most common cause of death in SA.
Prof Christo Muller, Chief Specialist Scientist at the SA Medical Research Council (SAMRC) says approximately 463 million people suffer from diabetes around the world – 90% of which are type 2 diabetics.
“Diabetes is possibly the biggest non-communicable (NCD) epidemic of the 21st century. It’s a major public health threat everywhere in the world and there is a growing incidence of T2D among adolescents and children as well, which is of grave concern.
“In most cases, type 2 diabetes is as a result of poor eating and sedentary living, aggravated by other detrimental lifestyle behaviours, such as smoking and excessive alcohol intake. Research has shown that in many cases the disease (if intervened early on) could be reversed by making the necessary dietary and lifestyle modifications. Rooibos tea could play an important role in this approach.
“Aspalathin – a unique phenolic compound found only in the Rooibos species – has been shown to improve blood glucose levels and therefore could help to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Our research found that green Rooibos, which is more abundant in aspalathin, was especially effective at lowering raised blood glucose levels in animal studies. In these studies aspalathin, enhanced insulin activity, the hormone that controls blood sugar levels, by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, which are factors that underly the development of metabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease,” explains Prof Muller.
Diabetics are two to four times more likely to die from heart diseases or stroke. Here, Rooibos can be of benefit too. Aspalathin also protects the heart by suppressing vascular inflammation and atherosclerosis (plaque build-up inside artery walls) that occurs as a result of high blood sugar levels.
Due to Rooibos’ rich antioxidant activity and potential for clinical use, it is gaining more attention worldwide.
Joe Swart, Research Director for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC) says in view of the limited access, long-term inefficacy and side effects of oral anti-diabetic medication in Africa, plant-based therapies for the treatment and prevention of NCDs are gaining considerable prominence.
“Scientists have already developed a method for the synthesis of aspalathin into an active pharmaceutical ingredient and for use as a nutritional supplement.
“Aspalathin-rich green (ARG) Rooibos extract can be utilised in novel therapeutic preparations for the treatment and management of metabolic dysfunction, including the control of glucose and cholesterol, which in turn reduces the risk of heart disease. The products have application in the complementary medicine, nutritional supplement and veterinary markets. Rooibos shouldn’t be viewed as a panacea, but in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, it could significantly improve health outcomes,” he says.
In the lead up to 14 November, which is World Diabetes Day, the aim is to bring attention to diabetes and to encourage cleaner living as a preventative measure.

According to a recent survey conducted by Pharma Dynamics, 56% of South Africans are suffering from higher levels of psychological and emotional distress than before Covid-19, largely as a result of financial concerns. Alarmingly, the manner in which they are dealing with stress is causing further harm, with 81% turning to unhealthy food, and 18 to 20% turning to cigarettes and alcohol respectively. Of the 1 200 polled, 65% are neglecting their health, with 52% of people having trouble sleeping.
“The detrimental effects of stress and anxiety have been well-documented, and the emergence of the pandemic has seen even more people impacted,” said COO of Joekels Tea Packers, Natalie White. “Stress can lead to a number of related health issues, which is why people need to find ways to cope with stress in a positive manner. The incredible mental and physical health benefits of Rooibos and Chamomile make our tea both an affordable and effective option for assisting with anxiety.”
Health benefits of Chamomile
Chamomile tea has been shown to act as a stress reducer because of the antioxidant, apigenin. This provides a sense of calm that allows the individual to deal with the challenges of the day.
The apigenin antioxidant binds receptors in the brain that decrease anxiety while also initiating sleep. For those battling with stress-related insomnia, drinking a cup of Laager Rooibos Chamomile tea before bed will aid in sleep quality.
As with Laager Rooibos - which is acknowledged for its heart health properties by the Heart & Stroke Foundation of South Africa - Chamomile is known to reduce the risk of heart disease. For those suffering from increased stress, the risk of heart disease also increases. Chamomile contains antioxidants called flavones that are believed to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, thereby improving heart health.
A high-risk group in terms of Covid-19 are those suffering from untreated Type 2 diabetes. Chamomile is believed to lower blood sugar levels, thereby enhancing the health of diabetics as well as pre-diabetics.
Stress often leads to stomach-related issues. Fortunately, Chamomile has anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties which sooth the stomach and alleviate symptoms.

]]>According to HSFSA Nutrition Team Leader, Hayley Cimring, “Heart disease and strokes are currently responsible for one in every five deaths countrywide. Recent studies show that people with a heart condition, vascular disease, or who have suffered a stroke, are at higher risk of complications if they are infected with Covid-19. The reality is that 80% of heart diseases and strokes can be prevented by simply living a healthy lifestyle, which includes healthy eating.”
Laager Rooibos Marketing Manager, Candice Sessions, stated that switching out certain bad foods and drinks for good, and adopting a few healthier routines, is all it takes to improve heart health: “These lifestyle changes don’t require a complete overhaul of daily life, but simply making some healthier choices. After a month, these positive habits become entrenched, and it’s easier to sustain these changes going forwards.”
Partnering with renowned South African dietician, Mbali Mapholi; the team from Laager Rooibos has compiled a list of simple lifestyle changes that will make a big difference to improve heart health this month.

]]>For over a century, antioxidant-rich Rooibos tea has been used to help ease and provide protection against colds and flu. Its ability to support the immune system in fighting viruses, enhances the body’s natural defence system making it a must-have pantry staple.
Here’s how Rooibos can help fight coughs and sniffles this winter season:
Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC) says if you’re looking for a natural way to beat colds and flu, look no further than Rooibos.
“It is packed with polyphenols, which are micronutrients with antioxidant activity. Polyphenols act as scavengers of free radicals throughout the body, which are detrimental by-products of cell metabolism that can cause inflammation. Aspalatin – a unique antioxidant found only in Rooibos tea, will help to boost immunity, whilst protecting the body against other illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes,” she says.

Every society across the globe is being impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak, with the effects being felt across every sector of life. The heightened levels of anxiety – whether conscious or not – are detrimental to health and wellbeing, impacting coping strategies during these challenging times. Joekels, one of South Africa’s leading tea manufacturers, is highlighting how the simple act of having a cup of tea can alleviate anxiety and improve overall health.
“There’s a reason so many people turn to a ‘nice cuppa’ during times of stress,” explained Laager Rooibos Marketing Manager, Candice Sessions. “The act of drinking tea, in itself, is a soothing activity. Add to this the health benefits associated with our Rooibos and herbal tea options, and this is a really easy, yet effective way to lower anxiety levels during these uncertain times.”
According to an article by Harvard Medical School, our ‘fight or flight’ response induces feelings of anxiety, but when the feeling persists without any need to flee or fight, then our physical health is undermined. Left untreated, this can lead to chronic illnesses including heart disease, chronic respiratory disorders, and gastrointestinal conditions.
Another publication, Medical News Today, outlined research conducted by Dr Malcolm Cross and Rita Michaels, psychologists at the City University London, on whether tea reduces stress. The results indicated lowered anxiety levels, not only related to the tea drinking, but also merely the act of making and having tea.
Significant health benefits of Joekels range
Three teas renowned for their calming effects are Green Tea, Rooibos and Chamomile. Joekels offers a flavourful fusion of these popular teas among its brands. The Tetley Pure Green Tea is a refreshingly light option, rich in antioxidants and linked to a reduction in blood pressure and associated heart disease. This is available in a refreshing mint flavour, zesty lemon flavour and aromatic apple flavour.
The health benefits of Rooibos are well known – it is naturally caffeine-free and restorative of body and mind. The South African Rooibos Council has noted the tea’s bronchodilator benefits, relieving respiratory conditions and reducing high blood pressure. It is also rich in antioxidants, including the rare Aspalathin which balances blood sugar, reduces insulin resistance and increases glucose absorption in muscles. Rooibos is also known to fight inflammation and boost circulation, improving overall health.
The Laager range includes Citrus & Ginger-flavoured Green Rooibos, as well as the Laager Cranberry Wild Cherry-flavoured Rooibos suited to different tastes. And for another anxiety-reducing option, Laager has the Mint-flavoured Rooibos & Chamomile tea which infuses the soothing benefits of Chamomile. This particular extract is believed to alter the levels of cortisol – a stress-related hormone – thereby easing anxiety and inducing sleep.
“Whether it’s a consistent sense of anxiety that we’re not always actively aware of, or a moment of panic, the stress we’re all feeling can be detrimental to us in the long run,” explained Sessions. “Often something as simple as taking a break with a cup of antioxidant-enriched tea is enough to re-set our bodies and minds.”

/ENDS]]>The results of the University of Columbia study are particularly alarming for South Africa as the country currently has the highest incidence of hypertension, globally, among people aged 50 and older. Now, more than ever, it’s important that people with heart conditions across all ages take better care of their hearts.
Taking all necessary precautions, as outlined by the South African government and World Health Organization (www.who.int), is vital, but South Africans can also find some heart-boosting benefits in a cup of Laager Rooibos. This is the only Rooibos tea that carries the Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA) stamp of approval – a symbol that is used to identify heart-healthy food and beverages.
According to the HSFSA, about 80% of cardiovascular disease can be prevented by lifestyle changes.Professor Pamela Naidoo, CEO of HSFSA, has noted that:“South Africa is a very unequal society with many communities living without enabling environments to exercise or eat foods that are recommended as healthy choices. However, we need to do the best we can to be physically active and eat the correct foods that will prevent obesity and the onset of Type 2 diabetes.”
Rooibos tea has been identified as one product that is beneficial to the heart. In a recent press release, The South African Rooibos Council (SARC) noted that more than two decades of research have been conducted by some of the world’s top scientists to better understand how Rooibos can curb heart disease.
SARC stated that:“The beneficial effects of Rooibos are largely attributed to its complex mix of antioxidant compounds. Currently, 59 of these have been identified of which aspalathin is one of the most abundant antioxidants. Aspalathin is also unique to Rooibos. It’s also Rooibos’ ability to counter inflammation in the body that makes it so potent. Inflammation promotes the growth of cholesterol-rich plaque in one’s arteries, which in turn triggers blood clots – a leading cause of heart attacks and strokes.”
As the only Rooibos tea boasting the HSFSA stamp, Laager Rooibos is the leading product in this regard. Laager Rooibos Marketing Manager, Candice Sessions, explained: “Including Laager Rooibos in your daily routine is easy and cost-effective. Second only to tap water, tea is the most cost-effective beverage available. Rooibos is also naturally caffeine-free, so it can be consumed throughout the day and also be used to add flavour and additional health benefits to a number of meals.”
Here are some tips for incorporating Laager Rooibos into your daily routine:
SARC recommends consuming Rooibos tea throughout the day as this will ensure a constant supply of antioxidants - one of the healthiest ways to stay hydrated. ]]>Many South Africans would agree that nothing beats a comforting cup of aromatic Laager Rooibos tea. Fortunately, research reveals that the popular anytime beverage is not only packed with antioxidants but also boasts incredible benefits related to preventing heart disease and strokes.
According to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of South Africa, heart disease remains the leading cause of death after HIV/AIDS; 225 South Africans are killed by heart diseases every day and 10 people suffer from a stroke in South Africa every hour. Due to these alarming statistics, Heart Awareness Month (September 2019) is essential to help combat against this pressing issue.
Typically, during September, individuals are encouraged to eat healthy, participate in regular exercise, avoid smoking and reduce their alcohol intake to look after their hearts. While most of us have heard of a heart-healthy lifestyle, not many of us have heard about all the heart-benefits packed in a humble cup of Laager Rooibos tea.
The South Africa Rooibos Council (SARC) is currently investing over R4.5m into research around the benefits of Rooibos, with heart disease being a core focus. According to Joe Swart, Research Director of SARC and co-Director of Joekels Tea Packers who own the Laager Rooibos brand, “Heart disease is a growing concern in South Africa, and many South Africans aren’t equipped with the right education or medication to manage heart disease effectively. That’s why we are passionate about funding research in this area, and educating the public on the heart-healthy benefits of a product (Rooibos) that is so easily accessible”.
One of the clinical studies funded by SARC has shown that regular consumption of Rooibos tea reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease in adults*, with the findings recently being published in the South African Journal of Science.
The Heart & Stroke Foundation of South Africa has also approved Laager Rooibos tea as a heart-healthy beverage, with Laager Rooibos being the only Rooibos brand that carries the Heart & Stroke Foundation “Heart Mark” – a symbol which helps identify heart-healthy products for the South African shopper.
5 REASONS TO DRINK LAAGER ROOIBOS TEA:
Rooibos is a great source of antioxidants. The high levels of antioxidants in the tea boost the body’s internal defense systems against disease. It is also the only known source of a potent and rare antioxidant, aspalathin, which could play a role in tackling several lifestyle diseases, including heart disease.
Rooibos is naturally caffeine free, which makes it suitable for children, breast-feeding mothers and for those who want to avoid the stimulating effects of caffeine.
Rooibos contains polyphenols (active ingredients found naturally in the tea). The complex mixture of polyphenols in Rooibos may help protect against free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage the cells and lead to cancer. These free radicals can also oxidise cholesterol, leading to clogged blood vessels, heart attacks and strokes.
This miracle drink plays an important role in promoting overall heart health and preventing diabetes.
Rooibos contains low amounts of tannin (teas with high levels of tannins tend to taste bitter, and tannin tends to interfere with the body’s absorption of iron).
Despite centuries of use, no negative side effects of Rooibos have ever been documented. Some people have revealed that Rooibos helps to relieve allergies, headaches, digestive problems and sleep disorders.

]]>So says Prof Amanda Swart from the Biochemistry Department at Stellenbosch University following an in-depth examination of peer-reviewed studies spanning the last two decades that were conducted on the therapeutic potential of Rooibos in the context of heart disease.
“To date, remedial therapy has been largely ineffective, which is evidenced by the growing incidence of CVD globally. In South Africa too, the condition remains the leading cause of death after HIV/AIDS with 56 284 people dying from heart disease every year according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA (HSF).
“Globally, there is a major shift toward the use of preventative and complementary supplements to promote well-being and help curb the progression of disease, which also coincides with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) ‘Traditional Medicine Strategy’, where traditional medicines are being prioritised for the improvement of health. This holds tremendous possibilities not only for patients, but for the Rooibos sector and SA too, as the herb is exclusively farmed in the Western Cape.
“Given the overwhelming body of evidence that exist, Rooibos’ potential, in both alleviating CVD in sufferers and lowering the risk of developing heart disease, is irrefutable,” remarks Prof Swart.
The beneficial effects of Rooibos are largely attributed to the complex mix of antioxidant compounds in Rooibos. Currently 59 of these compounds have been identified of which aspalathin is one of the most abundant and also unique to Rooibos.
CVD goes hand-in-hand with chronic inflammation and its Rooibos’ ability to counter inflammation in the body, that makes it so potent. Based on the studies undertaken in humans and rats, Rooibos offers the following cardio-protective benefits:
Prof Swart says future research related to Rooibos should progress to clinical trial phase in earnest, especially since studies suggest that CVD sufferers who regularly drink Rooibos tea, may require altered doses of prescribed medicine.
Research Director for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC), Joe Swart says a significant amount of funds are invested annually to investigate the health and medicinal benefits of Rooibos and that the council intends on proceeding with clinical trials in due course.
The outcome of Prof Swart’s review has been made public during Valentine’s Month, when matters of the heart is foremost on the minds of Mzansians.
To get the most from Rooibos, Prof Swart advises drinking it as a tea, whether it be red or green, which will supply a constant stream of antioxidants, while keeping one sufficiently hydrated.

]]>Summertime living is easier with rooibos:
Summer is on its way bringing with it warm weather, beautiful flowers, freshly cut grass and bared skin. While these are some of the things that we look forward to, for allergy sufferers they can have negative side-effects such as runny noses, nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, itchy eyes and skin irritation. Home-grown Rooibos may offer relief and help make your summer more carefree.
Rooibos can help fight allergies by boosting the production of Cytochrome P450, an important enzyme that helps to metabolize allergens. Japanese researchers at Showa University have found that when Rooibos is consumed regularly as a beverage, it helps to improve allergy status because of the increased levels of this enzyme in the body. In Japan, herbal teas such as Rooibos are widely used to prevent and relieve pollen allergy, asthma and other chronic allergies.
Many Rooibos lovers have found that they can use their favourite herb in many ways to treat the symptoms of allergies. Some suggestions include:
By going the natural route, you can save money on expensive medications, and because it is gentle and nontoxic, it is safe for children to use, making it the perfect allergy solution for your whole family.

Two scientists from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University – Prof Maryna Van de Venter and Dr Trevor Koekemoer – have established that Rooibos protects preadipocytes, which are the predominant cells found in fat tissue, from degenerating. This means Rooibos could reverse the onset of age-related diseases and even keep wrinkles at bay.
The just-released research study was commissioned by the Rooibos Council in 2012.
Says Prof Van de Venter: “Our research focused primarily on the preservation of healthy fat tissue as the redistribution of fat – a natural process which occurs with age – particularly to the abdominal region, has been linked to the onset of age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and cancer. Our aim was to slow down the rate at which these diseases develop as a way to improve the quality of an individual’s life.”
“Loss of fat under the skin also results in the appearance of wrinkles, sunken eyes and skin folds. To put it in simple terms, in old age there is less fat in places where it should be and more fat in deposits where it shouldn’t be, explains Prof Van de Venter.
Using various independent in vitro models which mimic specific aspects of the ageing process, the two scientists established that Rooibos protects preadipocytes – the predominant cells found in fat tissue – from degenerating.
The study further proved that Rooibos has the ability to partially restore the function of these aged cells and that both fermented and green Rooibos can protect cells from severe oxidative stress, which firmly establishes Rooibos as an anti-ageing proponent.
Co-researcher, Dr Trevor Koekemoer, explained that the fact that the anti-ageing effects of Rooibos can be ascribed to more than its antioxidant effects, is an important finding. “The discovery opens doors to ways in which Rooibos could prevent or at least delay the detrimental effects of ageing and holds profound implications for the industry. Our findings could spur novel therapeutic approaches for improving general health in the aged and potentially lead to a breakthrough in the field of regenerative medicines.”

Taking the Tea Leads to Better Cardiovascular Health
One of the main reasons why people buy Rooibos tea is that it’s rich in antioxidants, which are good for heart health. This happens in several ways. First, taking the tea has a beneficial effect on blood pressure as it helps in inhibiting the angiotensin-converting enzyme, which is effective in increasing blood pressure by causing the contraction of the blood vessels.
According to the findings of a study involving 17 people, taking the tea inhibited the enzyme activity up to 60 minutes after ingestion. However, this didn’t have any effect on their blood pressure. Some researchers also found that rooibos tea bags online can help to improve cholesterol levels. This was after conducting a study involving 40 overweight adults who were at the risk of heart diseases.
The participants of the study took six cups for six weeks. However, the results were different in healthy users. Healthy cholesterol levels mean more protection against various cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and stroke.
It Improves the Appearance of the Skin
Rooibos tea bags online contain alpha hydroxy acid, which is one of the main ingredients in skin treatments such as chemical peels that your dermatologist may prescribe. The compounds are not common in foods. Adding it to your skincare routine will help to reduce wrinkles.
In a clinical study that lasted 28 days, a formula of tea and rooibos resulted in almost a 10% improvement in the look of fine lines and wrinkles. The loose leaf tea has a soothing effect, and hence reduced irritation and redness. As a result, you’ll have more even-toned skin.
Loose leaf tea is rich in zinc, which has been found to be effective in treating common skin conditions, including eczema and acne. Superoxide dismutase is also present in rooibos tea and has anti-ageing properties. This helps to slow down the development of wrinkles, and you’ll look young longer.
The substance works alongside other components found in the tea to fight free radicals that accelerate the ageing process. Experts have encouraged researchers to focus on finding more evidence on how taking rooibos tea daily can keep the skin looking even and youthful.
It Helps to Prevent Allergies
The South African beverage contains chrysoeriol, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It helps to relieve the feelings of wheezing and coughing that occur due to allergic reactions. It has a flavonoid known as quercetin, which prevents allergies from triggering and blocks mast cells, which release elements that trigger an allergic response.
Rooibos works as an antihistamine but doesn’t have the drowsy side effects associated with most medications. Although the South African beverage isn’t a replacement for allergy treatments, drinking several cups daily can help to limit the body’s over-reactive immune response that triggers allergic reactions.
It Helps to Improve Digestion
Digestive problems are common among many people. The numerous cases of medical conditions such as chronic upset stomach and Celiac disease show no signs of stopping. While many of them can be attributed to poor diet, there’s increasing evidence that tea has digestive benefits. Some of the nutrients found in rooibos tea from a tea bag online shop help to prevent stomach pains. The shops have tea bag offers from time to time.
According to some researchers, compounds such as quercetin, and vitellin can help to relax the digestive system and feelings of discomfort. Consuming the tea is also effective when it comes to alleviating the symptoms of diarrhea. Additionally, it can get rid of the pathogens associated with stomach upset.
You’ll Get Stronger Bones
Rooibos tea from a tea bag online shop has vital minerals such as calcium and manganese that can help in building stronger bones. The minerals increase the activity of osteoblast cells, which are involved in building strong bone mass.
The South African tea is a better alternative as compared to other types of tea as it contains two unique compounds that are more effective in building strong bones. It’s also rich in flavonoids which help to increase mineral content in bones. Check tea bag offers on various sites.
It Has Compounds that Control and Prevent Diabetes
If you have diabetes, taking the tea can help to keep the medical condition in check. Studies have also found that it can prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. A 2013 study showed that some of the components of rooibos tea help in the regulation of blood sugar levels and increasing glucose tolerance. Although it’s not a cure for diabetes, it can decrease insulin resistance and alleviate symptoms.
